BUDDHIST CULTURAL TOUR

Day 1       Anuradhapura

Tour starting Colombo Proceed to Anuradhapura. On your way visit

Gangarama temple – You could worship the lord Buddha’s “Hair Relic “ which was gifted from Bangladesh and placed at Gangaramaya temple .

Proceed to Kelaniya Vihare - the place of Buddha’s final and 3 rd visit to Sri Lanka ***

Head to Anuradhapura en route visit : Arankale Forest Monestry , Arankele Monaster the site of an ancient forest monastery – the recluse monks who had been attracted to this site because of its very isolation and seclusion. Today it is a celebrated archaeological site containing the ruins of the ancient forest monastery.

Yapahuwa was Sri Lanka’s seat of governance and home to the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. Today it is one of the country’s most unique and important sites of historic interest containing abundant traces of ancient battlements and remnants.


Day 2       Jaffna

Visit the most important Atamasthana in Anuradhapura.

Sri Mahabodhi Tree During the reign of king Devanampiyatissa Sanghamitta thero brought a branch of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi. The Bodhi tree was planted on a high terrace about 21 feet. It was surrounded by railings and today is the one of the most sacred place of Buddhist in Sri lanka.

Ruwanveliseya , Thuparama, Lovamahapaya,, Abhayagiriya, Jetavanaramaya, Mirisavetiy, Lankaramaya

Visit Isurumuniya , vessagiriya , Mihintale and then proceed to Nagadeepaya.


Day 3       Trinco

Visit Nagadeepa** Constructed by the two warring Naga kings, Chulodara and Mahodara, on the site where Buddha, during his second visit to Sri Lanka, intervened and mediated in settling a dispute over the possession of a gem-studded throne. This throne was later enshrined in this stupa.

 Proceed to Trincomalee


Day 4       Polonaruwa

Visit Seruwawila

Seruwawila Mangala Raja Maha Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple in Trincomalee district in Eastern Province, which is among the sixteen or seventeen holiest Buddhist shrines (Solosmasthana) in Sri Lanka.

It was built during the reign of King Kavantissa (2nd century BC) containing the Lalata Dathun Wahanse (sacred forehead bone) of Lord Buddha.

Proceed to Polonnaruwa.


Day 5       Dambulla

Visit: to the Somawathie chayathya

Somawhaty Stupa is situated in the Polonaruwa Distric boadering the somawathiya national Park.

Somawhathi cithuya was build in 2 nd century BC and this stupa is said to enshrine the “ Right Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha

After the visit to Somawahtiya Raja chaittiya proceed to Dambulla


Day 6       Kandy

Early morning Climb Sigiriya Lion Rock , Dambulla Rock Temple which named as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO

Enroute visit Nalanda Gedige. Nalanda Gedige is a temple believed to be located in the center of Sri Lanka. An ancient hindu Temple believed to have used by Buddhists. Matale Aluviharaya Temple - Aluvihare Rock temple in Matale was selected as the most suitable and secured place to transcribe the Tripiṭaka

Visit to Golden Roofed Temple which houses the Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha

Visit Sri Dalada Maligawa or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, which houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha.

Day 7       Badulla

 

Leave for Mahiyanganaya

Mahiyangana Raja Maha Vihara is an ancient Buddhist temple in Mahiyangana,* Sri Lanka. It is believed to be the site of Gautama Buddha's first visit to the country, and is one of the Solosmastha, the 16 sacred religious locations in Sri Lanka

Visit to Muthiyangana Temple in the evening. Buddhists believe that this site has been visited by Gautama Buddha, and it is regarded as one of the Solosmasthana, the 16 sacred places in the country. Proceed to Deegawapiya


Day 8       Ampara

 

Visit Deegawapiya Constructed by Saddha Tissa enshrining relics of the Buddha, at the site where Buddha spent some time with Arhants absorbed in ecstatic meditation, during his final visit


Day 9       Kataragama

Proceed to Kataragama – on your way visit to Buduruwagala The name Buduruwagala means "stone images of the Buddha," and at 51 feet here stands the tallest in Sri Lanka and perhaps in the world, since the Bamiyan figures no longer exist in Afghanistan. The sculpture at Buduruwagala is in lower relief unlike the other comparable Buddha statues in the country at Aukana (46 ft), Saseruwa (36 ft) and Maligawila (36 ft) and for all of which it may have served as a model.

Visit to Kirivehera in the night

 


Day 10       Kataragama

Participate for the Kataragama Muruthan Pooja at 9.00 am. Then visit to Sella Kataragama , Vadihitikanda and to tissamaharama Dagaba. It is said that relice of the forehead of the Buddha is enshrined in this Dagaba. Proceed to Ratnapura


Day 11       Ratnapura

Proceed to Colombo via Ratnapura en route visit Divaguwava , & saman Devlaya

Divaguhava: this was the most likely spot that could be identified as the Divaguhawa where the Lord Buddha rested on his visit to the sacred mountain, the Sri Pada.


Day 12       Nallathanni

Climb Sri Pada – The sacred foot print which is respected by followers of all religions. Visit to Sri Pada is usually done during December to May


Day 13       Colombo

Proceed to Colombo. You could end your tour by visiting to Belanwila Raja Maha Viharaya

This temple is considered a place of great sanctity and veneration. And this is mainly due to its sacred Bodhi – tree.

Historical records reveal that this Bodhi – tree is one of the 32 saplings that sprang from the sacred Bodhi – tree at Anuradhapura planted in the 3rd century B.C.


Day 14       Colombo
